Are you looking for the best affordable sushi place in Vancouver? If so, you HAVE to try Sushi California! Their sushi rolls give such a generous amount and the flavours are very consistent. The restaurant can get busy, so be prepared to wait in line. Alternatively, you can call in and order take out. During the dinner rush, it can take up to one hour for the sushi to be prepared. Sushi California has multiple locations in the lower mainland. They have one in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey.
The best appetizers:
Agodashi tofu: This appetizer is perfect. The tofu is deep fried, and when it is served it is soaked in the sauce. It causes the outside of the tofu to be a wonderful chewy texture and the rest is super crunchy.
TakoYaki: This crispy deep fried ball of dough is filled with a gooey inside and a piece of octopus. It may sound strange, but you have to try it! I love these so much that I even purchased my own TakoYaki machine to make them at home! Find my recipe here. The TakoYaki machine can be purchased on amazon.
My favourite rolls are:
Crunch California roll: This one is a deep fried california roll, which includes loads of crab meat, avocado, and cucumber wrapped in seaweed, rice and fried to a crisp. This one never disappoints and it tastes the best when its hot.
Salmon Avocado roll: These are super healthy as its all fresh salmon and creamy avocado.
Salmon mountain roll: If you love salmon, this is the ultimate roll. I swear, one roll is enough for an entire meal! The roll has a fried tempura shrimp, and topped with a mountain of salmon and sauce.
Spicy tuna roll: These are loaded with tuna and has a good amount of spice to it.
You have to try at least one of these rolls! You will not be disappointed.
If you haven’t noticed, I absolutely love salmon. If you are not a big salmon fan, or raw fish fan in general, there are loads of other options.
- Chicken teriyaki roll: This chicken is coated in teriyaki sauce and is also very good.
- Chicken katsu roll: More deep fried goodness, in the form of chicken wrapped in a sushi roll.
- Smoked Salmon cream cheese roll: If you aren’t a big fan of raw salmon, try this roll. It has smoked salmon on top, and the inside is imitation crab meat, red pepper, and a small chunk of cream cheese. The cream cheese gives it such a rich texture.
It is always a good idea to order sushi with more people, so you can split multiple rolls. I find that 1.5 – 2 rolls per person is a good amount for a meal. If you are SUPER hungry, maybe even 3 rolls a person, but you will be stuffed!
The prices are super affordable. This is probably the best bang for your buck for sushi in Vancouver! You’ll get giant rolls for a very good price. Basic rolls are around $4 CAD each, and the more fancy rolls are around $8 CAD each.
Let me know if you check out this restaurant when you are in Vancouver!
