The Japanese owner and pastry chef at Baker and Table Cafe, Hitomi, did her pastry education in 2007 at Vancouver Community College. Hitomi apprenticed at many different locations around Vancouver and was involved in a lot of international competitions. She won many awards and started coaching students on her amazing techniques. Eventually on February 3rd, 2017, Hitomi opened Baker and Table Cafe. Baker and Table cafe means literary Me and a table we use under our cash register. It is amazing to hear about someone following their dreams, and I am glad Hitomi did, so everyone can enjoy her delicious pastries, buns, cakes and more.

The selection of speciality buns and pastries change often. The number one reason I wanted to try this bakery was for their adorable mochi buns. I’ve seen different types of buns, such as a shiba bun, lucky cat buns, and baby yoda buns. They all look so fun and colourful! One day I would like to try them all.  During this visit I had to contain myself and only get a few pastries. While at the cafe, I got 2 mochi buns; one totoro oreo mochi bun, and a green tea mochi bun. In addition I also got a takoyaki bun. I’ve never seen a takoyaki bun before, so I had to give it a try.

The Oreo Totoro bun is so cute! The mochi is soft and chewy and the bun has a subtle sweetness to it. The bread pulls apart so easily, and they taste so good! I would suggest heating the bun up in the microwave for a few seconds so that it is extra soft, gooey and warm.

The takoyaki bun was very interesting. There were 2 full pieces of takoyaki on top of the bun. This was a savory bun and it was very flavourful. If you love takoyaki, you should give this one a try. I will be back to this cafe to try some of their other specialty buns and pastries.

You have to try at least one of these mochi buns! You will not be disappointed.

The prices at Baker & Table Cafe are reasonable. You are getting a high quality product produced by a skilled pastry chef. I love supporting small, local businesses and I am on a hunt to find some hidden gems in Vancouver.

You have to try at least one of these mochi buns! You will not be disappointed.

Takoyaki Pan: $3.95
Matcha White Chocolate Lava Mochi Melonpan*: $4.45
Totoro Cookies and Cream Mochi Melonpan*: $5.35

The next time I visit Baker & Table Cafe, I want to try their mochi cookies. They also have them shaped as fun animals and have a variety of flavours.

Baker & Table Cafe also serves soups and sandwiches if you are looking for a quick lunch. You can also pre-order cakes and pastries online. Items like the matcha tiramisu look so delicious! You can also order their adorable buns off of Door Dash and get it delivered straight to your door!
