Kims Eatery - Recipe - Homemade japanese TakoyakiI first fell in love with takoyaki when I tried it years ago at Sushi California. It is crispy outside, with a soft gooey inside and a bit of chewy octopus in the middle. Ever since I had it, I usually order this as an appetizer whenever I go for Japanese food!

I wanted to try making takoyaki at home, but I needed to purchase a takoyaki machine. I tried 2 different methods.
1) Cake pop machine

2) Takoyaki Pan

The cake pop machine is a great size for the takoyaki. It has a top lid that folds over to keep the heat in. It is a cost effective option as I got my cake pop pan on Facebook Marketplace for $5. I make my batter, but since the cake pop machine cooks at a lower temperature, it takes quite a bit longer for the takoyaki to cook. If you are patient, this will take about 15 minutes to cook a batch of takoyaki. It yields a delicious result, but you MUST have patience. I would only suggest this method if you already have a cake pop machine on hand, or if you want to make cake pops in the future. Once I tried the cake pop method, I decided to splurge and purchase a takoyaki machine. This is a game changer. The takoyaki machine is about $65 CAD, and it works perfectly. It heats up quickly, and it has a lip around the hot plate to ensure the batter does not spill over the sides. It makes 18 takoyaki pieces at a time. I use chopsticks to quickly flip my takoyaki. 

I like to try different fillings inside the takoyaki. Some of my favourites are baby shrimp, squid, octopus and chopped up crab meat. 

The Dashi powder can be found at your local asian grocery store. I purchased mine at TnT for $6. You can also find it on Amazon for a higher price of $19.

This recipe will make 2 batches of takoyaki. I find that this is the perfect amount for 3-4 people as appetizers, but let’s be honest, I can finish this off with just my partner and I.

The perfect at home appetizer is a plate full of delicious takoyaki!

  • Takoyaki Machine


Takoyaki Flour Mixture:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 tbsp corn starch
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cup of water
  • 1 tspn dashi powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • ½ cup Cabbage chopped


  • Shrimp
  • Octopus
  • Squid
  • Crab Meat
  • Sausage

I like to top it off with japanese mayo, bull dog vegetable katsu sauce, and fish flakes/ bonito flakes.


    • Dissolve the dashi powder in the water. Then combine all ingredients and whisk.
    • Heat up your takoyaki pan with a drizzle of oil. Transfer batter into a measuring cup for easy pouring.
    • Pour in batter until each ball is filled, and slightly overflowing. Add in your choice of filling.
    • When the batter is sticking together, flip ¼ turn and use chopsticks to press any overflowing batter into the takoyaki ball.
    • Try to work quickly to ensure none of them burn.
    • Continue flipping until it is perfectly round and golden brown.
    • Serve with sauce and enjoy!
